Root canal Treatment

When is endodontic therapy (root canal treatment) necessary?

In many cases, tooth extraction can be avoided, and root canal treatment can prolong tooth life for many years. Endodontic treatment can be a great way to preserve a tooth in the following cases:

  • with pressing, throbbing, or persistent toothache;
  • with a facial tumor, which may be a sign of inflammation in the area of the root tip;
  • with extensive and deep caries affecting the tooth pulp;
  • if a previously treated root canal begins to cause symptoms.

In cases where the tooth pulp becomes inflamed, the affected part must be removed. Of course, there are situations when the inflammation cannot be treated, and tooth extraction remains the only solution, but in most cases there are good chances of saving the tooth.

How is the root canal treatment?

Unlike the old myths, root canal treatment in most cases can be performed completely painlessly.

The process of root canal treatment: Before starting the procedure, the tooth is anesthetized. The first step in root canal treatment is to remove damaged, infected areas of dental tissue and create a cavity in the tooth that will provide access to the root canals. Then the inflamed pulp (nerve) and infected tissues are removed from the root canals, while the canals are also subjected to chemical disinfection.

After disinfection of the root canals, their final closure is performed, that is, the sealing of the root canals. The filling is monitored using an X-ray image. After the tooth filling is completed, the final closure of the tooth crown is made in the form of a seal, inlay or crown.
