Tooth extraction

Most people go to the dentist only when their teeth hurt so much that painkillers and home remedies no longer help. It should be understood that if the tooth starts to hurt, the pain will not go away on its own, but may only temporarily weaken. Therefore, it is recommended to make an appointment with a dentist as soon as possible. In extreme cases, the solution is tooth extraction.

Why might tooth extraction be required? When is tooth extraction necessary?

tooth extraction

Dental problems identified at an early stage (for example, inflammation of a tooth or root) can be cured in many cases. However, over time, the affected and inflamed tooth can often no longer be saved, and its removal remains the only solution.

Tooth extraction is most often necessary when:

  • They undergo significant inflammation or are mobile.

  • The root is damaged and cannot be treated with other methods.

  • The crown is destroyed due to severe caries, and it is impossible to perform fillings or other dental procedures.

  • Root treatment will also fail.

  • There are teeth in the oral cavity that cause aesthetic or functional problems, such as protruding or tilted teeth.

How does tooth extraction work?

A thorough dental examination and X-ray are always performed before tooth extraction. Based on the image, the doctor decides whether a simple tooth extraction or surgery is required.

Tip: It is important that the patient eats before the procedure, as after anesthesia is administered, one should not eat until the numbness has passed (about 3-4 hours).

Simple tooth extraction

A simple tooth extraction is performed under local anesthesia. First, the doctor loosens the tooth, and then removes it with forceps. If an inflamed tooth is removed, it is also necessary to remove the inflamed tissues in the area of the hole. After that, bite the gauze swab for 30 minutes.

Surgical tooth extraction

In some cases, simple tooth extraction is not possible. This applies to situations where:

  • The roots of the tooth are broken.

  • The teeth were stuck in the process of development and did not erupt.

  • The X-ray shows strongly curved or branched roots.

  • The upper tooth is located close to the maxillary sinus, which can lead to its opening.

In such cases, surgical tooth extraction should be used. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. After opening the area, the doctor removes the tooth, and then thoroughly cleanses the wound of inflamed tissues and applies stitches to close the operating area.

To stop the bleeding, after the procedure, you need to bite the gauze swab for 30 minutes, after which the patient can go home. After complex operations, swelling on the face may occur, and antibiotics and painkillers may be required.

When may it be necessary to close the maxillary sinus?

The maxillary sinus, or sinus, is located in the upper jaw above the teeth. Sinus closure is necessary if it opens. This can happen when molars are removed, when the maxillary sinus connects to the oral cavity through the tooth site.

To close the sinus in the area of the extracted tooth, incisions are made in the gum, forming a flap that is stitched together to separate the maxillary sinus from the oral cavity. The stitches are removed after 1-2 weeks. If the sinus is not closed, food and drinks can enter the nasal cavity, and various bacteria can enter the sinus, causing inflammation that requires treatment by an otolaryngologist.

What is removal of the tip of the dental root?

Root tip resection is the removal of the root tip of a tooth. If, after treatment of the root canal, inflammation occurs in the area of the root tip, this surgical intervention is used to save the tooth.

The operation is performed under local anesthesia. A small incision is made in the gum, through which the inflamed bone tissue and the tip of the tooth root are removed. Then stitches are applied, which are removed after a week. After surgery, painkillers may be required, and swelling on the face may also appear, which disappears after two to three days with external cooling.
